CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing
CO2 laser resurfacing (carbon dioxide laser resurfacing) is an intensive skin rejuvenation treatment that can improve moderate to severe sun damage and signs of aging.
What is CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing?
CO2 laser skin resurfacing uses an ablative fractional laser to penetrate the mid to deep layers of the skin for intensive rejuvenation. The fractional laser removes microchannels of skin and heats the superficial layers to stimulate the body’s natural wound-healing process and boost collagen production. Collagen is a protein that naturally helps the skin maintain elasticity, volume, and a firm texture. Since the CO2 laser penetrates deeper layers of the skin than other laser treatments, more significant signs of aging and deeper acne scarring, or other forms of skin damage, can be effectively treated. Laser skin resurfacing can be used to rejuvenate sun- damaged or aging skin on the face, neck, and chest.
For an added collagen boost, add PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) to your treatment. PRF is a rich source of natural healing and growth factors that can further enhance your results and speed up healing for less downtime.
Who is a Candidate for CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing?
Candidates for CO2 laser resurfacing are in overall good health with moderate to severe irregularities in the texture and tone of their skin. Patients with darker skin tones may need to consider a gentler treatment since they are more at risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Pregnant women and individuals with an active skin infection (acne, cold sores, etc.) should wait to receive treatment.
Good candidates for the laser skin resurfacing procedure can improve:
Fine lines and deep wrinkles
Moderate skin laxity
Rough skin texture
Acne scars
Sun damage
Before your laser treatment, our highly skilled staff will ask about your medical history and examine your skin to make sure this is the right treatment for your aesthetic goals.
The CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing Procedure
Since CO2 laser skin resurfacing is a more invasive procedure, a topical numbing cream will be applied to keep you comfortable. You might feel a warming and/or tingling sensation as the laser device is passed over their skin. After your treatment, it will feel like a sunburn and it will be important to follow the post-care instructions.
CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing Results
There is some downtime required after more intensive CO2 laser treatments. Medium-depth treatments typically require 7-10 days of recovery while deep laser treatments require up to 16 days. During your 1–2-week recovery period, the skin will gradually rebuild the ablated outer layers with resurfaced healthy skin. Avoid sun exposure and strenuous exercise to protect your healing skin and minimize swelling. Patients can expect significant improvements in the quality of their skin and a rejuvenated youthful appearance that lasts for many years.
