Botox®

FDA-approved neuromodulator to reduce the appearance of wrinkles

Fine lines and wrinkles are one of the earliest signs of aging. If you are frustrated by visible wrinkling, Botox is a quick and painless treatment that can restore your natural beauty and youthful appearance.

What is Botox?

Botox is an FDA-approved botulinum toxin injectable, also called a neuromodulator. Botulinum toxin type A temporarily relaxes the facial muscles and prevents muscle contractions that cause dynamic fine lines and wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles are caused by repeated facial expressions like laughing, frowning, or smiling. Botox smooths these facial wrinkles to restore a more youthful appearance. It can also be used as a preventative treatment, paralyzing the muscles before wrinkles become prominent.

Who is a Candidate for Botox?

Healthy adults who do not have an allergy to botulinum toxin or other ingredients in the Botox formula can benefit from Botox injections. Botox can target the following types of wrinkles:

  • Crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes

  • Frown lines (glabellar lines)

  • Forehead lines

  • Bunny lines on the nose

If you are also concerned about deeper facial folds, Botox can be combined with dermal fillers for more dramatic rejuvenation. Botox is also an effective treatment for a gummy smile, TMJ disorder, and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).

The Botox Procedure

Botox treatment takes less than 30 minutes and is minimally painful. Most patients tolerate the injections without any discomfort, but a topical numbing cream can be applied at the start of treatment to maximize your comfort. First, your skin will be cleansed of any makeup or surface debris. Next, a fine needle will be used to inject Botox in the targeted treatment areas.

If you would like numbing cream at your appointment, this must be request when scheduling your appointment. Numbing adds additional time to the appointment since the cream takes time for the numbing effect to set in.

Botox Results

There is virtually no recovery time after Botox so you can immediately return to work or other daily activities. Mild swelling, bruising, and tenderness around the injection site are common but these effects will improve within a few days. To minimize swelling and prevent Botox from shifting, avoid strenuous activity and sun exposure for 2-3 days.

Botox results will gradually develop during the week after treatment. After 10-14 days, you will see the final results of smoother, wrinkle-free skin. These effects last for 3-4 months and can be maintained with additional Botox treatments.
